The New Story

Image
This New Story comes just in time.
Human commerce is fundamentally destroying the biosphere (as we have known it) on our small blue planet….. So, The Sacred Universe story can remind us that each of our stories, is a paragraph in this larger story. In other words, it's our story too… it's one story (uni-verse) that continues.
We Have Been Here Before.
We can take solace in what has happened to us thus far. Many times in this epic story, on this very planet, the whole experiment of life could have ended.
For example, nearly 2.5 billion years ago on planet Earth, a noxious gas, generated by some of the earliest life forms, poisoned the atmosphere and threatened all life. It even etched the rocks! Life on Earth hung by a thread. Would the story end right then and there, leaving this planet as a dead rock floating in oblivion?
The gas was oxygen. It was literally burning cells up from the inside. So, life got creative. Mitochondria were born—first as stand-alone creatures, then a…

The Rigged Game

Image
I am unaccustomed to rage.

Even as a child, I understood that the game was rigged.  Over time, I've become even more aware... though I have had the luxury of not having to think about it all the time--to not have to face it, and the feelings it brings up, day in and day out. All day.  Every day.

Until this week.

This week has been particularly difficult  (the supreme court nomination hearings) and has exposed yet a another level of the rigged game.   It brought up in me a deep rage--and I felt it all week in the pit of my stomach... I was struck by the injustice of it all.

I felt like throwing up.

It gave me the opportunity to imagine what others have felt over generations of systemic injustice.

I understand that I am both privileged and oppressed.  I've benefitted from the rigged game in so many ways... from being able to walk into a store without suspicion to having access to higher education. I have also suffered from the rigged game--from wanting society and power structu…

Qualities of a Gamechanger

Pachamama Alliance has a course entitled "the Gamechanger intensive".  In it they share the qualities of a gamechanger in these times (Source: Pachamama.org):

1. You understand that all life is connected. You see the human family, in all its diversity, as an integral component in the web of creation, and you are committed to building a society that reflects and reveres the sacred and interconnected nature of all life.

2. You stand for a sustainable, just and fulfilling future. You stand for, and act from, an informed vision that a sustainable, just and fulfilling future for all beings is essential urgent, and possible.

3. You recognize an evolutionary force at work. You recognize that the evolutionary force that put the stars in motion is moving through us and is a dynamic, self-organizing process whose grace and guidance we can trust.

4. You appreciate that human beings are called to become “evolutionary activists.” You realize that humanity has now become an active driver …

Amplify the Call

Image
The historic and inspiring Global Climate Action Summit, @GCAS2018 closed yesterday with a strong Call to Action to "step up ambition", chart a clear path towards a zero-carbon future and to empower grassroots climate action. So let’s work together to amplify this call.https://www.globalclimateactionsummit.org/call-to-action/
We can do this.  It is our Great Work.

"The Great Work before us, the task of moving the modern industrial civilization from its present devastating influence on the Earth to a more benign mode of presence, is not a role we have chosen. It is a role given to us, beyond any consultation with ourselves. We did not choose. We were chosen by some power beyond ourselves for this historical task. Yet we must believe that those powers that assign our role must in that same act bestow upon us the ability to fulfill this role. We must believe that we are cared for and guided by these same powers that bring us into being."

- Thomas Berry, The Great Work

Baby Steps

Image
My grandbabies are taking their first steps now--and in a few months from now they will be RUNNING... in a couple of years, skipping.

They don't know it now, but these baby steps are opening up a whole new world for them. Today, they cannot imagine playing varsity basketball or hiking Mt. Lassen, but any of that is possible.

What does this have to do with reversing global warming?

Drawdown shows us that reversing global warming is possible, yet the required change to human behavior and systems seems massive from our vantage point today.

This presents us with a crisis of imagination. A spiritual crisis... one that can be solved with baby steps.

What do I mean?

Today, most people are sitting on the sidelines out of overwhelm, apathy, despair, cynicism or worse. We need to get connected and take action together. Yet, many cannot imagine how to do this.

Behavioral change expert and Stanford University Professor B.J. Fogg (tinyhabits.com) says that there are three things that need to b…

Befriending Our Despair

Image
As compassionate, sensitive, open people, we can all be overcome by the magnitude of the losses we
see every day. Even the most optimistic among us will be affected by the staggering losses and the daily affronts to our values, sensibilities, and even our sanity.

It is painful. So painful that sometimes we are tempted to close up rather than live from the heart.

Joanna Macy and her "work that Reconnects" asserts that we ought not be afraid of the pain of the world.

If you are not afraid of it, then NOTHING can stop you.

Soil can save the world!

Remember this? The Soil Story

Well, "Kiss the Ground" has a new trailer out.  It's only a minute long and it is fantastic:

Yes, living soil can help reverse global warming.

Four Levels of Action for Change

Individual actions matter--and they add up. And large policy issues matter, and so writing and calling policymakers in important.

But our whole human economic system needs to change! We need ways to successfully disrupt the destructive economic systems and ways to challenge dominant thought-patterns and change the cultural story.  We can't do this with only those above two levels of action.

Luckily, there  are two more levels of action where real change happens. Will Grant and the Pachamama Alliance shares how this works.

What if Global Warming is Happening for Us?

Image
Pachamama Alliance recently interviewed author Paul Hawken on the topic of why it is important to set a goal to REVERSE global warming--and how that is possible.  He asks a provocative question: What if global warming is happening for us?  What if it isn't a fight against at all, but a call to a deeper understanding?

In his book Drawdown, scientists offer a rigorosly researched solutions for reversing Global Warming.  Most are already underway.  We are on this!  Let's accelerate it

This weekend Loretta and I went to visit our grandbabies. And it occurred to me that it is important to me to be able to take them outside. But here's the thing--I can't. Why? Because I do not want them to breathe the air that has been deemed "unhealthy" and "unsafe" --smokey air that is causing us to cough and wheeze every day.

The wildfires that rage throughout the forests in the Western U.S. have transformed trees and wildlife and homes into smoke. And this is not one or two days of smoke. These fires will last the WHOLE FREAKING SUMMER into the Autumn. We will breathe smoke until it rains in November--assuming we can count on that in this crazy year of climate catastrophe.
I ask those of you who are parents and grandparents--Is this what you wanted for your children and grandchildren? A whole summer of being cooped up inside? Breathing noxious air? And what about next summer? And the summer after that? These…

Rainforest Journey with Pachamama Alliance

Image
I've not shared the rainforest experience with anyone really... I somehow don't have the words. Loretta and I returned from the Ecuadorian rainforest only to be evacuated due to wildfire and now, with the air here so needing those "lungs of the planet," it almost seems self-indulgent to remember how easy it was to breathe there. But one of our lovely traveling companions created this awesome video that shares the journey in ways that mere words cannot. So, enjoy.

P.S. You'll want to watch this in full screen mode.

First stop: Quito Ecuador

Important safety tip— learn Spanish before you go.

One of my biggest fears in traveling to Ecuador was not knowing the language.  As it happens, I was saved by a downloaded version of Google translate.

Pachamama - Changing the Dream

I'm heading into the Ecuadorian Rainforest to be with an intact indigenous tribe - the Achuar - a dream-based culture. Pachamama (Mother Earth) calls...

It's time to get serious about changing the Dream.

A Framework for Changing Anything

The Time to Mobilize is NOW...

Image
First, here is an excellent article by Bill McKibben on our current response to Climate Castastrophe:

https://newrepublic.com/article/135684/declare-war-climate-change-mobilize-wwii

The net of it is this: it is time for a world-wide large scale mobilization for a "war" we are currently losing.  We can turn it around if we put the same level of intensity and energy into fighting it as we did WW2.

Second: Here are the top 100 solutions courtesy of Paul Hawken and his research team.  "Drawdown" covers proven solutions that ALL need to be implemented in order to reverse Climate Change:

Remember Tomorrowland?

When I was five years old, I was introduced to the Magic Kingdom.  I loved all the themes, but especially enjoyed Tomorrowland and "The City of the Future."  I knew in my heart that technology
would make everything even better.

Optimism is a Political Act

Image
Cynicism is obedience.

From a great article by Alex Steffan:

"Entrenched interests use despair, confusion and apathy to prevent change. They encourage modes of thinking which lead us to believe that problems are insolvable, that nothing we do can matter, that the issue is too complex to present even the opportunity for change. It is a long-standing political art to sow the seeds of mistrust between those you would rule over: as Machiavelli said, tyrants do not care if they are hated, so long as those under them do not love one another."

A powerful video - story in images. (not to time scale, obviously). Enjoy.

The Power of Changing the Story

Image
From Charles Eisenstein:
"Every act that comes from the understanding of interconnection, of inner being, is a spiritual act, and
also a political act.

By acting from a different story, we disrupt the psychic substructure of our mythology. And we offer an alternative... any time that we give somebody an experience that doesn’t fit into the old story, it weakens that old story. It disrupts it. It could be an act of generosity. It could be an act of forgiveness. Anything that violates that understanding that we’re separate, and everyone’s in it for themselves,

Being in service to something larger than yourself. "

Wow and yes.

Principles of Spiritual Leadership

Image
Will Keepin’s Principles of Spiritual Leadership

(also published as Principles of Spiritual Activism - Source: http://www.earthlight.org/essay40_deboer.html)

Explanation reposted from https://transitiontownmedia.org/the-twelve-principles-of-spiritual-leadership/:
The following is from a presentation at Schumacher College, Totnes, England by Will Keepin, president  of the  Satyana Institute, Boulder Colorado. Will describes the principles as the beginning of a collective inquiry into how we can apply spiritual teachings in social change work.

1. The motivation underlying our activism for social change must be transformed from anger and despair to compassion and love. This is a major challenge for the environmental movement, for example. It is not to deny the legitimacy of noble anger or outrage at injustice of any kind. Rather, we seek to work for love, rather than against evil. We need to adopt compassion and love as our foundational intention, and do whatever inner work is required to i…

A New Story

Image
Let’s start with a story.
Earth’s story began in an instant 13.7 billion years ago. We flared forth as light, underwent a series of creative and irreversible transformations, both physically and psycho-spiritually, until we arrived here –in this moment, on this beautiful blue planet, interconnected with and a part of all that is here in this place. Earth is our home and we are part of her unfolding story.
Problem: We Are Between Stories
Have you ever had a family member who seemed to be in one crisis or another all the time? In many family systems, we encounter individuals that always seem to create crises in their life---and in the lives of those around them. Why is that? Evidence suggests that humans create crises, not just as individuals, but as a culture: institutions crumble around us, ecosystems struggle, Earth’s own climate is shifting…. all crises the we collectively create.

Permaculture Soul

Lately, I've encountered more and more people who believe our culture is living the wrong story.
The old cultural story is this: we need things to be happy, and we definitely need more money.  Abundance is limited.  We must fight for our share of a decreasing pie. Earth is here for humans to use (or use up).
What is in the way of creating a New Story? It is this...

Fear.

For example, one result of the old, dysfunctional story is this: most people who have "enough" are afraid they soon won't.  They resent anyone who needs more, even if it's just to survive. Those who do not have enough are afraid too--desperate even--that they won't have what they need to survive.

There are plenty of dystopian Hollywood movies from Mad Max to The Day After  to Idiocracy that show us how a this story like this ends:  it’s a story of death and dying.  In all of these unhappy endings, Earth is trashed for the sake of human needs or conflict.  The vulnerable are exploited. Our c…
